2 Samuel Study 2:
Patience & Perseverance
2 Samuel 2:1-11
I. David Anointed King of Judah (vv. 1-7)
A. Three significant events:
i. David and his men move to Hebron
a. The threat is gone and so God tells David it is time to head back to Israel.
b. They settled in the towns, plural, of Hebron
c. We are realistically looking at a number, most likely, well over 2,000 people.
ii. David was anointed king over Judah.
a. David was accepted by the tribe of Judah:
a. David was from the tribe of Judah.
b. David fostered important relationships while he was fleeing from Saul and
while he was in exile in Ziklag.
c. 1 Samuel 30:26-31
i. David sent gifts from the spoils of battle to his friends, who just happened
to be the elders in the tribe of Judah.
b. Why Hebron?
a. Location
b. A city of refuge.
c. David blesses Jabesh-Gilead
a. David recognized the kind act that the men of Jabesh-Gilead did for Saul
and Jonathan.
B. Application
i. Two observations:
a. God is working and moving things along for David.
b. The promise still has a ways to go until it is completely fulfilled.
ii. David is going to have to be patient and continue to persevere until God’s plan if
fulfilled completely.
C. Being patient is a lost art.
D. There will be times in life that we are to going to have to learn to slow down and be
patient.
E. There are going to be times in the midst of patience that we are going to learn
what it looks like to persevere.
F. Understand that God has a plan for your life.
G. God is moving us forward at His pace.
H. God prepares us for what He has called us to, and that takes time, it is a process.
I. We need to learn what it means to be patient and wait on the Lord.
J. Jeremiah 29:11
i. God has a plan for you, He wants you to have a future and a hope.
K. Foster your relationship with God so that you find yourself in time with Him, not
lagging behind or getting ahead.
II. Ish-Boshesh Anointed King of Israel (vv. 8-11)
A. In the aftermath of the devastating defeat that Israel has just experienced at the
hands of the Philistines Israel was in turmoil.
B. Israel needed a king and Ish-Bosheth was the man Abner chose.
C. Application
i. David just kept doing what God called him to do where God called him to be.
ii. This is our call as well.
iii. Philippians 4:10-13
a. Learn to be content where God has you, regardless of the circumstance.
III. Conclusion
A. When we focus on what God is doing in us and through us we are better equipped
to do both.
B. God has you right where He wants you.
C. God is preparing you for future ministry and He is using you where you are at right
now to fulfill His will in your life.
D. Be content where you are.
